Montrose Boulevard is more than just a street; it’s a vibrant cultural artery connecting some of Houston’s most diverse institutions and neighborhoods. From the iconic North Main Street to the city’s heart on Main Street, Montrose represents Houston’s legacy, vibrancy, and potential. However, outdated infrastructure and past planning limitations are keeping this boulevard from truly reaching its potential.

The proposed transformation by TIRZ 27 aims to create a world-class corridor for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike, addressing essential issues like drainage, accessibility, and sidewalk space. Though difficult decisions regarding tree removal are necessary, this project has been carefully considered to balance environmental and community needs. A Tale of Two Bridges supports this initiative, recognizing that we must address past planning limitations head-on to build a better future for Montrose and beyond.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is tree removal part of the Montrose Boulevard Improvement Project?

Tree removal is necessary to make room for wider sidewalks, improved drainage, and safer access along Montrose. Many of these trees were planted too close to the street during prior projects, leading to today’s challenges in balancing infrastructure needs with green space. The project team is committed to replanting and enhancing the canopy wherever possible.

Fact #1: For every tree that is removed, a 65-gallon tree will be planted and irrigated in its stead.

How will the project benefit the community long-term?

The redesign will improve pedestrian and bike safety, boost flood resilience, and add accessibility features, making Montrose Boulevard more inclusive for all users. Additionally, the project prioritizes long-term tree health with better planting practices, ensuring Montrose remains green for generations to come.

Fact #2: Trees planted in the original proposal will be able to thrive for decades to come using modern planting techniques.

What measures are in place to preserve the environment?

The project team prioritize trees as essential infrastructure. While some trees must be removed, the plan includes replanting and expanding the tree canopy in a way that ensures they are well-suited to thrive alongside new drainage and sidewalk improvements.

Fact #3: Every delay to improving our infrastructure is paid for by poor experiences for all users of the road, sacrificing safety and quality of life for future generations.

How can the community support the project?

By staying informed and voicing support, the community can help demonstrate the importance of safe, sustainable infrastructure on Montrose. We encourage residents to engage with city council meetings, participate in public forums, and stay connected with advocacy groups like A Tale of Two Bridges for updates and ways to contribute.
