Brays Bayou Switchback

The Spur 5 expansion (TxDOT Project numbers CSJ0178-09-018/019/020 and 0271-16-111) has cut through the Brays Bayou Greenway, severing a vital walking and biking connection between Fonde Park, University of Houston, and nearby neighborhoods. Right now, TxDOT’s detour (in red) pushes trail users far off the bayou, onto busy streets, adding distance and safety risks.

The community is proposing a shorter, safer detour (in yellow) that:

  • Keeps people close to the bayou instead of pushing them into traffic.
  • Maintains the continuity of the Brays Bayou Greenway system.
  • Reduces extra mileage and confusion for families, seniors, and students.
  • Supports Houston’s Vision Zero and Bayou Greenways 2020 goals.

Without action, we risk losing trail users’ trust and making a major public investment—the Brays Bayou Greenway—less accessible. TxDOT and the City of Houston can fix this by adopting the community’s proposed detour.
