A woman and a young child walk along a paved trail bordered by grass on one side and a black metal fence on the other. Along the fence are wooden raised garden beds filled with green plants, and a metal arch trellis extends over part of the garden area. The sky is clear and sunny, casting shadows on the path.

The Railroad Community Garden

Save the Date: Grand Opening: Sunday October 26
A person wearing patterned gardening gloves plants a small pepper plant in a raised wooden garden bed. The soil is dark and freshly turned, with other plants, including basil labeled with a small sign, growing nearby. A black metal fence runs along the background.

Growing Roots Together

Born after planting more than 20 new trees along the 700 block of Nicholson Street, the Railroad Community Garden is a collaboration with a neighbor who shares a deep love for gardening. Our vision is to create a bilingual space where everyone can learn about gardening, enjoy its beauty, and have easy access to fresh produce.

Honoring the history of Nicholson Street—once known as Railroad Street—we’re designing the garden to grow like a train, with “carts” that allow us to expand along the block. Together, we’re cultivating not just plants, but a place for neighbors to connect, learn, and thrive.

Learning from Our Ecosystem

Houston lies within the Humid Gulf Coast Prairie, an ecological region once dominated by tallgrass prairies, wetlands, and coastal woodlands. This ecosystem is characterized by high humidity, heavy seasonal rainfall, and diverse plant and animal communities uniquely adapted to thrive under these conditions. Although much of the prairie has been lost to development, its ecological functions remain critical—providing flood mitigation, pollinator habitat, and climate resilience.
